Lesotho / Eastern Cape / Wild Coast Tour
April 8 @ 8:00 am - April 18 @ 5:00 pmR46000
The WildWood Lesotho/Eastern Cape Drakensberg/Hogsback/Wild Coast super tour is without doubt the most scenic adventure biking route in South Africa.
The three zones, each crammed with their own particular beauty link seamlessly into a ride to remember.
The tour starts in the town of East London (daily flights from all major SA airports) and immediately heads to the Wild Coast. Three days riding the coastal cliffs of this green paradise, crossing numerous gorges and rivers, many with challenging descents and tricky climbs. We meander between the simple rural Xhosa settlements of goat and cattle herders before we head west to the foothills of the Maluti Mountains and the second leg of our journey, Lesotho.
The tour enters Lesotho via the magnificent Sani Pass, quickly climbing to almost 3000 meters (10000 feet) with the last 5km an unpaved 4×4 only track. Best be quick though as tarring has begun at the bottom and plans are underway to tar the entire pass. Our 4 days in the mountain kingdom of Lesotho will be spent traversing many remote off-road mountain passes, with tracks and vistas that make adventure rider dreams a reality. Highlights include Katse Dam, Village Chiefs Trail, Semonkong Village.
We depart Lesotho in the south via the Southern Drakensberg Mountains and the highest mountain passes of South Africa, all gravel and each more spectacular than the last. From our base in the hamlet of Rhodes we’ll ride legendary roads like Carlisleshoekspruit Pass, Bastervoet Pass (Bastards foot), Otto Duplessis Pass, Volunteershoek Pass, Naudes Nek Pass and Ben Macdhui Pass (highest in SA). From Rhodes our journey goes south to Hogsback, taking in another three magnificent off-road passes, Devils Bellows, Katberg and Michels’ Pass. Our last night is spent in the enchanting village of Hogsback, inspiration for J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the rings’. After a leisurely morning exploring town it’s a short spin back to East London.
Like all WildWood tours it’s not all easy riding and strictly aimed at riders with a good level of off-tar experience. No need to be an enduro racer but must have dirt riding experience. The accompanying pics will give a good indication of what to expect.
Total distance over the 11 days is 2300km (1430 miles) of which 90% is off tar.
Accommodation is bed & breakfast with dinners included on two nights.
Roadside lunches in remote locations from the support van.
Support carries all out gear, fuel when needed as well as basic bike spares, lubricants etc.
I lead the tour on a bike at all times and we ride together as a group. Satellite phones in the support van and with the lead bike in case of emergency.
We have late model KTM 690 Enduro R and Husqvarna 701 rental bikes or bring your own.
