KAOKOLAND ODYSSEY – MAY 2022

April and May this year we returned for two tours to our most popular tour destination , the rugged north western regions of Namibia, Kaokoland and Damaraland. Even though WildWood has completed over 30 tours in this remote untamed wilderness each one is a unique experience. Namibia is truly a special destination and the north west is the jewel in it’s crown.

Kaokoland is remote and rugged with precious few formal roads, let alone asphalt highways. Often the only track options are the vast dry riverbeds and rough two-tracks . Just perfect for adventure motorcycle riding.

Accommodation on our tours is a mix of stunning bush lodges and camping in the most remote areas. These two tour were no different when post tour our guests, even those initially sceptical of camping were unanimous the Namibia camping was a truly special experience. A camp fire, barbecue dinner, sounds of the wild and clear star filled skies are priceless.

Sadly for only the second time in all our tours in the area we failed to see the desert elephants on the April tour but the May trip we had some of our best encounters with the majestic beasts , as well seeing herds of antelope like oryx, springbok, impala, giraffe, zebra and kudu. A rare highlight was seeing three adult lions walking in a riverbed near the Brandberg Mountains.

The Ova-Himba people of Kaokoland are nomads that live much like they have for centuries in small settlements of clay round huts, herding goats and cattle in this dry remote wilderness. A proud gentle nation they are the very fabric of the north west and our interactions with them remain highlights of every tour. Despite their simple harsh existence they remain proud and contented. We can learn so much from these wonderful people.

Already looking forward to our October tour in Kaokoland . The June 2023 tour is fully booked and we’re looking to add another date in may or late June.
