Report – November Baviaanskloof Wild Ride

There is a good reason the Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve is a Unesco World Herritage Site and South Africa’s favourite adventure motorcycle riding destination. It’s a stunning place to ride motorcycles with options from tough to moderate available.

The Baviaanskloof is a gorge about 100km in tenth crossing endless mountain  streams and a three proper off-road mountain passes. It gets its name Baviaanskloof from the Dutch name for the Baboons that live in the Kloof along with much other wild life. Worth mention are the numerous antelope like kudu, zebra, klipspringer, eland, as well as buffalo, leopard , reptiles and birds and raptors.

For this trip a group of riding mates asked me to arrange three days of riding from the coastal town of Knysna through the Kloof. The brief was for some tougher tracks and WILDWOOD happily obliged.

Our route looks us through the Karoo town of Steytlerville and we entered the Baviaans via the rugged Antoni’s Pass and over the Groot River. Some rough tracks and stunning views. As to be expected the journey through the body of the Kloof was spectacular with dozens of beautiful river crossings, epic views from the high points and some rough tracks. The return to Knysna was through the rugged ‘side entry track,’ a permit access route over a privately owned farm. We are truly blessed to have such beautiful wilderness areas to ride our motorcycles / mtb’s and four wheel drive vehicles.

Four nights in great hotels / guest lodges with much laughter, good food and perhaps a little to much wine capped a memorable trip. I look forward to hosting theses lads in Kaokoland, Namibia in August 2025.
