Ride Report: Orange River Wild Ride – July 2024

The Orange River Wild is a rugged off-road desert tour in the north west of South Africa.

For 2024 we started in the mining town of Okiep and did a 4 day circular loop of the Richtersveld, West Coast sand tracks and the Namaqua 4×4 trail. Definitely for experienced adventurers only. If you battled with deep sand riding before the tour and you made it home you are now a proficient sand maestro.

The tour can be described as a mini Dakar rally, with each day a manageable distance at a chilled pace with plenty of stops to take pics and pontificate and then enjoy a great meal and cold beer in comfy lodge at the end of the day.

We chose late July to take advantage of the early spring flowers when the Namaqua desert comes alive with colour for a brief time.  Sadly for 2024 the weather stayed overcast and the legendary Namaqualand flowers remained hidden but the cool fresh air was glorious for tough off-road adventure touring.

Wildwood tries to schedule a couple of Orange River Wild Rides each year if time allows. Please contact us at john@wildwood.capetown (email) or WhatsApp John+27833252381 if you’d like to join in 2025. We have KTM500EXC’s and 690 Enduro R’s available as rentals.
