The ‘EPIC VISTA’ tour.
Our journey begins in Windhoek and immediately enters the Namib Desert on route to Swakopmund on the Skeleton Coast.
The rugged Khomas Hochland road and the treacherous Bosua Pass set the tone on day one. After another long and rough day 2 we were happy to exchange our bumpy steeds for a 4×4 tour to the world renowned Sossusvlei Dunes , Dead Vlei and Sesriem Canyon. The worlds most photographed dunes never fail to impress and the walk to top of Big Daddy Dune is a marathon but so worth the views from the top.
The hot air ballon flight over the dunes at sunrise on day 4 is a bucket list experience and one to cherish forever. After our flight it was back on the bikes as we continued south to Aus on more gorgeous desert roads. Every hill revealing another breathtaking vista.
Day 5 we departed our lodgings at Klein Aus Vista and headed west to see the famous wild horses that roam the desert. Although the shy ponies were a distance away it was still a highlight to glimpse these legendary creatures before we turned 180 degrees and made our way to the Fish River Canyon. Fish River Lodge is an outstanding establishment perched on the rim of the world’s 2nd largest river canyon. It takes a lot to top waking in the morning to a view of the canyon from your bed or sundowners from the lounge / rim flow pool and the canyon lying below. Breathtaking and the highlight of the tour.
On our final day in Namibia we headed south to the Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and the Orange River natural border between South Africa and Namibia. Beautiful gravel roads and an a short deep sand crossing after the heavy summer rains that quickly got everyone’s attention. Thankfully we all made it through with some caution but a good reminder of how conditions can change in these remote regions.
Day 7 we crossed into South Africa at Noordoewer / Vioolsdrift border post and immediately headed into the Richtersveld Reserve Canyons on route to a fish lunch on the west coast at Port Nolloth. Amazing rock formations and twist gravel tracks.
On our final 2 days we slowly made our way to Cape Town on mostly gravel roads and passes, overnighting at beautiful lodge in the sleepy village of Van Rhynsdorp.
This was the first time we’ve run this tour since Covid and we’ll certainly make it a regular feature on our calendar again. Perfect for the bigger twin adventure bikes but riders must have some sand riding nous as conditions vary with the weather.
