Himba ladies still dress in traditional attire
Kaokoland / Damaraland tour number 56.
After 56 epic tours of the region over the past 10 years I still look forward to the next one. It is simply the best adventure touring destination on the planet. Just remember you’ll need to bring everything along for the ride, including fuel, food and water. This is remote with a capital R.
This was a local touring group that requested a mix of camping with the regular lodge / guesthouse accommodation. The highlight evening was unsurprisingly our remote ‘wild camp’ under Namibian night skies.
October is the driest time in the region and the big antelope and desert elephants head to the dry river beds where we were fortunate to see them in droves. Desert elephants, giraffe, oryx, springbok, zebra, wildebeest and more. Some very fresh lion prints were noted but thankfully they remained out of sight.
It’s always a privilege to interact with the Himba people in the truly remote regions as well as the Ovambo, Herero and Damara in the larger villages and towns. Epuwo (capital city / town) of Kaokoland in particular is the ultimate melting pot of the different cultures and tribes of northern Namibia. In a supermarket expect to find a bare breasted Himba women in a que with a business man in a suit, a Herero women in full victorian costume along with a pale skinned tourist.
And of course the rugged tracks and roads in the stunning wilderness perfectly suited to our KTM and Husqvarna rental motorcycles.
